Obituary

Colonel James Powell Adams, "Jim", age 76 of Charleston, SC passed away on March 7, 2018. He was born on July 26, 1941 in Milford, DE to the late Major General Albert White Adams and Christine (Powell) Adams.

Jim was a Colonel in the United States Army where he proudly served his country for over 40 years. He began his career in July 1959, joining the Delaware National Guard as an enlisted man until he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June 1966.

In September of 1989, his years of work culminated in heading a Damage Assessment Team which evaluated the damage inflicted by hurricane Hugo on the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Virgin Islands National Guard. He continued with this work of reconstructing and reconciling the federal property records in the Virgin Islands, which were destroyed by the hurricane.

In July of 1990, Jim retired from the Delaware National Guard and entered Active Duty to serve as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer, U.S. Virgin Islands. He retired from this position in July 2001.

Jim had the great honor of receiving many awards which included: the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army and Air Force Commendation Medals, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Virgin Islands Meritorious Medal.

After Jim retired from the Army in 2001, he sailed the Caribbean and spent his retirement as many dream, in gorgeous locals with friends and family. He had a great amount of experience with sailing and made multiple trips from Maine to the U.S. Virgin Islands on his own. He put down roots in Charleston, SC after waiting out a storm and spent the remainder of his time living on the water, enjoying the boating community and becoming a connoisseur of shrimp and grits.

Jim is survived by his sons: James P. Adams, Jr. and his wife, Lauren of Galveston, TX and Edward R. Adams and his wife, Taylor of Newark, DE; and three grandchildren: James, Philip, and Stuart.
